AIESEC Tallinn's summer

AIESEC Tallinn showed a lot of good results last term and is already actively working hard to achieve new amazing results.
BUT this is not all. AIESEC Tallinn is also actively enjoying the summer. Since the awesome summer weather started we have shown strengths, skills and positive attitude by participating in different cool events.
All of the active summer events are supported by Matkad.ee

Canoeing trip
LC Tallinn together with LC Tartu put together their strongest athletes and went canoeing. 16 brave members put on their sport clothes, flip-flops, tightened their life jacket and started to race on 5th of June.
The best canoes flipped over already during the first 50 meters. Others were trying to get the idea how to run and use the paddles. There were some fallen trees that needed to be crossed and some small rapids where the river really tested our wisdom and skills.
We passed through around 10km and on the road we saw some interesting garden details, beautiful nature and our motivated members where singing and enjoying the great day
In the end of this incredibly cool trip we managed to get 5 people wet and all of the people happy and full of energy to do this again soon

Bicycle trip
LC Tallinn members also had a three day bicycle trip in south of Estonia. 4 members started their trip from Tallinn rail station on 18th of June with the direction to Pärnu and after 2,5 hours we arrived at Andres place. During the first evening also the other joined as and 9 members bicycle gang drove around Pärnu together 30 km.
Next morning we put on our best bicycle costumes and took some kinky pictures and started our way towards Abja Paluoja – Madis place. It was a day full of interesting weather, cool animals and lots of fun. We visited a zoo with small animals, we had the best fish soup ever- made by Madis and we had the privilege to ride against the wind with very refreshing rain.
In the evening when we arrived at Madis place already hot sauna and warm food was waiting for us. The day ended inside the camping drinking sider/bear and listening to the nastiest stories by Manuel and Oliver.
The next day we enjoyed a really good weather, we visited Latvia, went to walk through a bog and visited the Karksi Nuia old castle.

Orienting in Noarootsi
LC Tallinn was also represented in a orienting event organised by BEST Estonia. 4 previous LC Tallinn board members and a very experienced AIESECar started a very long and eventful road in Noarootsi peninsula on 22nd of June.
Team AIESEC started their road around 00:00 o’clock. We ran through dark forest, met some very lovely local people, we striped down, we sang songs, we plashed in water, put together a puzzle, drank some weird drinks and build 2m high tower from 50 cm branches.
At 11:00 in the morning we arrived to the finish exhausted but happy for going through the almost 37 km long distance.
We did not win but we got a very strong second place from almost 12 teams. You can see here that AIESEC people are really motivated and strong and if you want to achieve something then you will definitely achieve it.
Enjoy the rest of the HOT summer and take everything from this summer because this time will never come back :D

Dear passengers of the Flight 07/08,

This is your captain speaking. The flight that took off exactly one year ago has now safely landed to switch the captain and the crew!
Our take-off was quite bumpy, and for a while we had no idea where the heck we were flying to. However, at some point we managed to find the map and started to fly towards our destination. The flight has been really joyful and I hope that you have all enjoyed a lot. There have been many stops on our way to celebrate and have fun as well as get some work done.

With these words a former EB team finished their term 2 years ago.

Our EB term is now also officially over. For us, it was a very intense period with so much challenges and learning. Sometimes it was very tough but exactly tough enough to handle everything.

This year has been all about Change and Friendship. Doing something we really love to do and giving the best of ourselves. We strongly feel that LC Tallinn is a family - we have seen this at conferences as well as outside of AIESEC. We have become true friends who enjoy each others' company everywhere - remember conference Synergy where LC Tallinn literally rocked the house; remember Women´s day when we conquered club Fusioon with Cotton Eye Joe; remember this Saturday when we were saying good-bye to Julian in Cathouse club; remember all the nights we have organized random office parties? The list goes on. Being an AIESECer is a connection that unites us everywhere and anytime. We just know how to be cool and sophisticated!

When thinking about all the things that happened this year then the bottom line is that it has been amazing. What made it amazing was you guys - every single one of you!

We especially want to thank all the team leaders who we have worked with this term - Jaanika Okk, Jana Šubitidze, Tiina Leiger, Laura Randmaa, Mari Sarapuu, Alar Laanep, Jarne Liivak, Marianna Mihelson, Tõnis Vaiksaar and many other members. It is a great pleasure to work with people who have something to offer, someone to learn from every day. They are definitely those people.

So thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Jaana´s story as the OGX TTÜ Team Leader

I decided to apply because I love challenges. Also I really started to love AIESEC and I wanted to go to the next level. At first I was really afraid as I didn`t saw leader in me, I have never even thought about this idea (me leading a team). Later when I really got into planning my next term in AIESEC I realized that I want to do something different in order to grow. I started to think what qualities I need to be a good leader and I thought that I should try this position (or at least apply for the TL position) as I love communicating with other people, I knew already some stuff about AIESEC to pass on, I was eager to learn and of course I liked to get challenges. Luckily I was selected :))
First thing when I started my term was creating a plan for the new term - setting goals and job descriptions for team members. When I got people in my team I needed to create a team spirit. I got to know my team members and all of them were so cool people! We started to plan our team goals and I explained how are we going to work.
After this year I can really see the power behind teamwork, how it is done when the whole team is working in order to achieve team goals. As a leader I know what it means to lead by an example.

Jaanika´s road as Eyes Wide Open (EWO) team leader

Summer 2009

I didn´t apply for EWO team leader position. It so called „fell into my lap“. I joined EDU team in May 2009. And in the end of June, Tiina (team leader of EDU team) asked if I would want to lead Klapid Eest! team (which was one part of EDU project). At that moment I didn´t have a clue what this means, but I agreed.

On 1st of July was the first meeting with people from Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu. We didn´t select national coordinator and I agreed to manage finances of the project – temporary, but as it is said that there is nothing more constant than temporary things. So I started to write fund applications for this project. But the idea was that the fund application must be with the new and fresh idea. It meant that I started to write the concept of the project. At the beginning it was said that this project will be like World On Wheels (WOW) where the theme was entrepreneurship. And the original name was Klapid Eest! WOW. Because of the new theme, which I thought might be about consumption, I suggested the new name: Eyes Wide Open. Klapid Eest! was mandatory name, so the final name was Klapid Eest! Eyes Wide Open. In August I continued with writing project concept and fund application.

Autumn 2009

From the beginning of October, after autumn recruitment, 5 fabulous people joined me. At first there was a lot of introduction work. We got to know each other better end better every time. We had weekly meetings and the collaborative work started. I was very excited with being a team leader. In autumn almost everything seemed so easy. But constant rejections from funds were very depressive. Nevertheless everything else worked quite well: contracts with school, EP-s, introduction week etc. There was a lot of work done. To be honest, it was hard, but I enjoyed every moment of this work. EWO team was very hard working and the results were obvious.

Winter 2009/2010

At the beginning of the year we started again with hard work, although exams were in January which made EWO work a bit harder. We made interviews with EP-s and matched them. School agreements were finalized, we got the apartment for EP-s and some food. Finance issue was still a problem, but LC was very supportive at that time and we got some help from them.

Spring 2010

In the end of February the first EP-s came to Tallinn. And then the real stress started: preparation of EP-s, sending them to schools and joining them in schools. Although I wasn´t able to attend their lessons as much as I wanted, but at least I visited some schools. There were some issues with some interns, which amplified the stress factor for me. The big aim was to make the life for interns as comfortable as possible. But to hear the positive feedback from some schools and seeing that EP-s try to develop the lessons gave the energy back. Now the project is finished and some interns have already left Tallinn and others are leaving very soon.

Now when the project is finished it is good to look back what has been done and what was the impact for me. I learned a lot about teamwork: how to manage the team and how to keep all functions working. I couldn´t do all this work without EWO team. Unfortunately one of my team members quit in the middle of the project, in result the work for other team members piled up. But they handled it very well.

I think that all that stress is just one part of the project and this is inevitable. But my motivation and passion were the elements that kept me going and motivation of my team members kept my mood up during stressful times. The main thing was to keep up with the project flow and keep myself up to date. I think that altogether the whole term was positive experience. And the reason for this was my team (I won´t stop repeating this!).

I can´t wait to see what course the project will take the next term.

Alar´s story as the Market Expansion TL

I had been in AIESEC for 2 months involved in sales team, selling traineeships to companies, making sales calls and going to sales meeting. It was all new to me and lot to learn but I found myself thinking of something more than being just a team member. As AIESEC aims to develop future leaders I felt that I wasn't getting this leadership experience and also I felt that I needed a bigger challenge.

Then LC opened leadership positions for the next term and I decided to apply. I started filling in the application. The decision was quite easy for me but with this decision came many mixed feelings: fear, doubts, excitement.

Looking back now I see that these feelings were really normal as any new challenge that one decides to face. Looking back now I feel fortunate that I had this opportunity and I had courage and will to apply. And fortunately I was elected for the position I applied.

The year as a team leader has definitely made me into a better person than I was before and I have learned a lot about leadership, value of team and team work. I have learned to always stretch myself and try to think out of box and big. I have learned to never give up - the moment you give up the environment around you will lose yourself in that decision. There are always things to improve, people to talk to, solutions to be created and judgments to be faced and mindsets to be changed. Also being responsible for not only myself has though me a lot about my own motivation. And finally I have learned to have fun and take the journey and the challenges you face with a bit of humor, things are never as serious as they look and you are rarely to find the best solutions when you are stressed, frustrated and depressed.

During a year there have been many failures and many successes. But the most positive thing during the year I will remember is people I have met. AIESEC has amazing, passionate and smart people and everyone has their one story. One chapter in my story is now ending and the next one is starting soon. I feel now that because of this decision I made a year ago I am now ready to face even bigger challenges.

Mari´s story as the OGX TLÜ TL

Future team leader ! You are probably wondering that you haven’t lead a team, think if you have the right skills and what would happen if you don’t have all the right answers. So, forget all that !

You are definitely the right person! You are in AIESEC, which means that you are capable of anything. Believe that! You have already the right tools and resources, but you just have to believe in yourself, I know I am!

But what’s my story? Well, I guess most of you don’t know that, but I first applied a TL position in Tartu EB, with no leadership experience what so ever. Unfortunately I didn’t get the TL position that I wanted, but fortunately I was offered ET OGX TL position, which is basically EDU project. I gladly accepted that, but as it turned out I changed my subjects and came to Tallinn.

It was all new to me. Well, I know AIESEC is cool, but what about LC Tallinn. I knew some people, but still I wasn’t sure, whether to be a TL or not, so in autumn I started my work as just a team member.

As the time went, at some point I felt that I need bigger challenges and there are a lot more for me to gain and also to give. Therefore applying for TL position in February wasn’t difficult, because it had been in my head for some time. But...I still had doubts. How will I do the first meeting, how will I be a leader, when all the members in my team are used to me as a member. How will I be heard? Actually it wasn’t so difficult and I learned in progress as well. As my job wasn’t as easy as the people applying now, because I came a TL in the middle of the term. You can have a long period of transition, planning and all that fun stuff!

If you haven’t been a team leader, then you actually don’t know how to prepare for that. You can learn by failing and trying different things. That’s very normal and okay.

I have learned that I don’t have to do everything on my own, I have my team and there’s a lot more teams and people who are willing to help team leaders with everything. If you think you might be stupid, while asking so many questions, but if you don’t know something then you need to ask. If you don’t get your answers, then you don’t get the knowledge.

If you don’t know how to be a leader, then this is your chance, it’s your time to shine and gain the knowledge that you don’t have now, because nobody is expecting you to be perfect. If you are, then very good, but usually it’s not that way.

The most positive thing about TL experience has been the surprising moments, when I learn something new about me. Also the constant pushing the limits a bit.. I realize that I can do more that I have done at the moment. And as a lot of people have mentioned it, the people are just great, you will have a great support from others and get to know different opinions.

In the end I would like to say that in autumn, when I started just as a team member. When I look back then I realize that I regret a bit that I didn’t take the chance to be a TL then, when it was offered to me. Like you, I was hesitating. Hesitate, but go beyond that. Even if you don´t know if you are ready, you’ll never find out, what might had happen if you had taken the role as a team leader.

Laura´s story as the TL of EDU Team

I felt I wanted to use the chance right away not to wait till I'm married with some African and will be living in Taiwan or somewhere else as AIESEC pretty ofter does with people.

In the beginning I felt excited and powerful. I was the BOSS.

In the middle I have had some periods when I' m so busy with some other responsibilities or I just have lack of motivation. But there is an uphill after every downhill, which give me an other experience to learn something. Usuallly it's not a problem if you are a little bit distant from your team for a short period. They understand and survive.

Now I feel I can change some young person's (Yours) life to motivate them to have the experience most people don't have when they are in that age.

The greatest is when people say you do your work great and they think you can be a role model for someone else.

As I started to lead a team, which already had really good team spirit and the work was ongoing, I just continued the work, created some tracking system and felt powerful :)

I' ve learned a lot about how to work with different people, accept and respect them. Learned to manage my time much better, how to get motivated when it just doesn't work. I'v got a lot more bravery to climb higher, step out from the ground and be the one who influences others.

The EB team 10/ 11

The first round of EB elections 10/ 11 is over. The ride has been an experience not only for the new just elected EB but also for the current one.

The emotions that the stories the current EB shared in the videos brought back good memories on how awesome the year has been.

The Election Day in Tartu on the 13th of March- Listening to the LCP speeches and VP speeches- brought back memories about how we were feeling when we took that step.

In Tartu we chose our new LCP- Ott Niggulis and gave confidence to 4 VP candidates. But no one new what was going to happen to them- will Ott pick them to become the EB team 10/ 11 or not?

But now the wait is over! The fate of Kadri Kõvask, Evelin Pani, Mari Sarapuu and Alar Laanep has been decided!

But this is not the final team. They are still looking for two people to be a part of team which will lead LC Tallinn next term. Who will be those people- YOU?

Well, my plan to fill the recruitment application form went wrong. Not just wrong but I didn’t do it, because I got a phone call from one company and they invited me to a job interview. This call changed all my plans and I found myself smiling. Maybe I don’t have to go abroad?

After ten minutes smiling I decided to read more about recruitment. Why my happiness stayed so short? Believe me, after a long period of having a lack of luck it is a normal reaction to doubt about everything. On the website www.aiesecestonia.net I found a lot of information about application procedures and realized that planning to go abroad is not so easy. Before you send an application to AIESEC coordinator you have to compose a curriculum vitae, full the registration sheet and read forward. Now I know that it is last minute to start with collecting money ;)

My friend has herpes on his mouth and he goes to see himself on the mirror about every hour. He is hoping that herpes will heal or best of all fade out by miracle. That’s how I hope, every time when the new day begin that something exciting will happened with me. The truth is that nothing won´t happen if you do not accept a decision or makes any choices. I missed my today’s excitement.

My name is Girl and I decided to pass through the winter recruitment in AIESEC Estonia. During the recruitment period I will write my story as an encouragement for you, who still isn’t sure if the recruitment is something you wish to do. I am not sure whether going to abroad is the right solution for me at this moment when my life is a big mess and I cannot find any exit.

I am 26 years old (as you noticed not so young anymore) and in spring 2009 I lost my beloved job. I have been between jobs approximately 9, almost happy, months. I am changed as a person, but to be honest, I do not miss my “old” me at all.

During the unemployment period I have broadened my mind and trying to figure out what I enjoy the most in my life. I feel that I am very close to my own truth, but not exactly …

In November and December 2009 I am participating in training program that is meant for beginner entrepreneurs. As a result of this training I should produce a proper business plan and become an entrepreneur. Today I realized that I rather shoot myself instead of becoming an entrepreneur. I do not want it and I don’t like it although I know that my family is counting on me. Sorry!

Finding my own truth is the reason why I decided to join AIESEC Estonia. Tomorrow I will fulfill the recruitment application form and look forward what will happen next.

What are you doing this summer?

Thought I post today something practical - why talk about philosophical things only, when the main joy in life comes through practice (and through practice comes philosophy:).

So here's a chance - making an adventure this summer, going away from Estonia for 2-3 months to work in a new country.

The program is easy - you apply, get selected and get a chance to choose an internship from different Central- and Eastern-Europe countries.

You arrive to a new country and culture (CEE region is rich of cultures - from Turkey and Balkans to other side of Russia), create a new network of friends, get new professional experiences and once you arrive back - see a world in a whole new way.

3. Get friends - some of my best friends are from CEE region, they are different, I love it (I love my Estonian friends too, anyway it's good from time to time be overwhelmed by kissing-hugging-smiling-sharing-people from South part of the region)! World is small, it's good to know people

4. Discover a new culture - people do things differently "out there", they understand world in a whole new way than you, they challenge you with their values, approaches and explanation of how things work. Getting to know it makes you see Estonia differently and bring some innovation back here

5. Make a next step in your professional career - university over or about to end? What next? I guess some reflection time while discovering new working styles and spending time out of the influences "back home" helps you to figure this out

So here's the idea - grab your chance before you get settled in an internship in Estonia you hope will help you in the future. Or get settled with a permanent job or a family or anything else that would keep you permanently here without finding out what COULD have been. 2-3 months of investment of your time to something that can influence you a lifetime is worth considering.

What next? Start by contacting Alisa - alisa.logofatu@aiesec.net (or if you are already AIESEC member - contact her anyway to ask about your next steps). This girl is more than glad to help you with practical information and get together with people who help you to find yourself after a few months in the middle of Europe, in the beginning of a remarkable adventure and personal learning experience!

Hellooo again from my side :)

I wanted to say special thanks to Oliver, Elina, Tarvi, Marko, Maris, Mustafa, Evelin, Ott and Kike (I hope I didn't forget anyone :)) with whom we had an interesting evening about the external environment around us and discussing how to take the most out of this knowledge. I saw new fresh ideas that came up when we started to focus on the ideas instead of focusing on what would stop us from doing things. I will let you know when the materials have been uploaded so that you can also take a look at them :)

For all others who really do care about AIESEC Tallinn & Estonia's future - it was one event in the sequence of thinking up best focuses and solutions for the next year. In the beginning of May - 1st until 4th - there will be a National Planning Conference in Pärnu so you can already book it in your calendar :) There will be plenty more information about it coming up soon as well ;)

And of course, few last notes - I'd also like to bring out Oliver, Tarvi & Siret who were working on the external environment research - although the overall state of the environment around us in Tallinn in general couldn't be concluded, then from their work on the areas they researched, some trends could still be pointed out :)

I also wanted to say special thanks to Ivan, the director of our own region CEE and to Marjam and Alisa who were guiding us during the evening.

Today I could not be happier for AIESEC Tallinn!:)

There are Executive Board elections coming up this weekend and quite soon we will know who will lead us during the next term - June 1st 2008 until May 31st 2009. But before we can really proceed with that, there was just one last tiny thing to do - make sure that all members who are brave enough (knowing all that has to be known about AIESEC) will get the chance to become a full member.

There were interviews with tough and tougher questions, but finally the decision about each and every candidate was made.

We had altogether 18 interviews with 16 members.
Out of them 11 are now full members of AIESEC Tallinn.

JCI World President Invites AIESEC Members to Join JCI

AIESEC International President welcomes JCI World President.

Today's students are far too conservative and accepting.

On February 22, JCI World President Graham Hanlon attended the 2008 AIESEC International Presidents meeting in Orhid, Macedonia. He was the first JCI President to do so in many years. AIESEC, as the world's largest student organization that helps students discover and develop their potential so as to have a positive impact on society, is a natural source for new JCI members.

A debate during the meeting centered on what the world will be like in 2025 and what students can do now to shape that world. Three candidates for AIESEC President, and representatives from Junior Achievement and the International Association of Agricultural Students (IAAS) joined Hanlon on the panel.

Hanlon told more than 200 young student leaders from 80 countries that today's students were far too conservative and accepting. "I am not asking you to run out onto the street and start throwing eggs, but today's students are far too accepting," he said. "If you in AIESEC, like we in JCI, wish to see change, then you must constantly articulate your views and push for change."

Asked if the environment will still be a major issue in 2025, Hanlon said he sincerely hoped it would not be. "If we are still talking about the environment in 2025 the way we are now, it means we will have failed in our responsibility to solve the environmental and ecological challenges that confront us," he added.

Join JCI!

The student body was keen to know what they could do after graduation to continue to live out the AIESEC philosophy. "Join JCI," Hanlon advised quickly. "As soon as you start your professional career, you WILL, whether you like it or not, become absorbed into the mainstream, and will soon be consumed by those everyday things that presently do not occupy your mind," he added.

"You'll focus on your job, career, income, pension, property and eventually relationships," said Hanlon. "These are all part of life but the demands they place on people in today's world are so great that many lose that passion and desire they had as students to make a difference. In JCI we keep that desire to make a positive contribution to change."

Students asked panel members what issues would be relevant in the future. "Ethics, particularly in business, is a growing concern for people" said Hanlon. "I think this is evident from the various groups appearing in society, like the Fair Trade for example," he said. "In JCI, we are concerned about ethics. That's why we have partnered with the United Nations Global Compact and have an active Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program."

Partnership Agreement

Prior to the debate, Hanlon held a constructive meeting with AIESEC President Gabriela Albescu and AIESEC Global Networks Manager Emanuel Gaverts. Discussions centered on a new partnership agreement between JCI and AIESEC. Both parties agreed that it could and should become more dynamic as the synergies between the two organizations were not being fully used to benefit both organizations.

Acknowledging that many of their national networks had close cooperation, all felt much more could be achieved. It was agreed that a new cooperation agreement would be entered into in 2008 and strongly promoted within JCI and AIESEC.

After all the formal engagements, Hanlon had the opportunity to participate in the festivities with AIESEC members. He refused to rule out the possibility of becoming a "mature student" some day in the future.

Spring Seminar 2008

Hey guys!!!!

Here is a bit information about Spring Seminar 2008.

We are waiting member candidates and internship candidates (all you new people :) ) at 10.30 in TTÜ.

AIESEC members will have more information soon (tonight).

At 23.00 (Saturday) we will all move to the Tudengimaja which is located in Raekoja plats 16. There we will have a party and election results announced.

We will all sleep at our homes, so people from outside Tallinn, who have no place to stay, have to write Elina an e-mail and we will definitely find you a place or there is possibility to stay in Tudengimaja for the night :)

On Sunday internship and member candidates will have their sessions in Tudengimaja. We use public transportation for moving.

We have also changed the fee:

100.- for member and internship candidates
50.- AIESEC members 50 kr (because they will stay only for 1 day).

If you have already paid, then we will pay you back.

So see you there ;)

I felt that previous two posts were sort of incomplete without bringing out what I learned most from these two special events - applying for EB VP and for LCP.

(1) There is never enough time for filling in the application. Especially when it gets just a bit thorough each year and requires more research for knowledge.

(2) There is never enough time for writing the MOST PERFECT speech. Everything just happens so quickly after sending in the application.

(3) There aren't right or wrong answers for the application, in the Questions&Answers round, during VP candidates' interviews. There are just answers which suit AIESEC Tallinn reality more or less.

And if I was to give few recommendations based on these, that would be it:

(1) Look at the application as soon as possible after it comes out. Then you what is waiting ahead and how to divide your time between your responsibilities so that you would have fair amount of time for answering questions.

(2) If you're not so sure what should the speech be like, ask around. There are plenty of members around who have given speeches when applying for EBs and they would be most delighted to chat with you and help you. If you don't know where to start - look up some general information about writing speeches in Google for example. All in all - talk about things you know, if you don't know - find out and make sure you know what you're talking about ;)

(3) Make sure you know how the process is like (what has to be filled in, when is something happening, etc), then it's a whole lot easier to focus on the content and quality!

Thinking of applying for EB* 08/09? 2/2

If you thought that the second part would be about applying for EB the second time, you are absolutely correct :)

I'm not quite sure anymore when I first started to get ideas that I could apply. I guess somehow it came from seeing how well Siim managed our team. And most likely from the fact that people had high hopes for me. There were a lot of people who tried to convince me that I should apply to become the next LCP**, but I had all my life planned already and LCP year didn't really fit the plan.

I remember so well those conversations with Siim and something he told me once - if I want to get the kind of leadership experience that would help me in the future managing for example my own family, then LCP year would definitely be IT. Ahh, yes, I haven't mentioned yet - my other option was to apply for MC VP, but that wasn't so facinating either, I suppose.

So this time I managed to help a little bit with the application and booklet and felt really good about it. I started to like the idea of applying - especially because I started to find out who were the people who thought of applying in other cities - Kribu and Mari. Ooh, that was nice how we already bonded before we were elected, in Synergy 2007 we saw the real synergy that we could create!

Guess what - I hadn't learned from applying the year before! The application was a little bit shorter in length, but a lot longer in it's content. The questions were harder, more information had to be searched than ever before. And during all this time - I was quite alone with my doubts. I even considered not sending in the application, but thanks to Siki who motivated me so much during these last few hours, I made it!

This time it was also tougher to make the speech. As in previous elections I reminded myself the magic of writing speeches, this time I wanted to take it a step further. So I decided to make sort of "spontaneous speech" :) It took a lot of self searching, finding out what would people want to hear, reading new information from the web, looking for puzzle images at 2am before THE DAY!

The competition was hard, votes divided between us - it really was a close call that I would not be writing this here today from LCP point of view. But I made it and it has been one of the best things that happened with me in AIESEC! And today I couldn't be happier about my decisions so far :)

Hello there my dearest AIESEC Tallinn members!

Today I wanted to share very personal story of mine with you :) It is about applying for EB, twice.

When I became a member of AIESEC Tallinn, I was quite sure that I just want to meet some cool people and spend few hours per week doing some AIESEC stuff. Okey, so things didn't go quite like that :D I didn't even go to the very first Annual Conference when I was a newie...

Still I started to get some funny ideas about applying for EB after my first really awesome conference - Synergy 2006.

I had a lot of doubts: should I apply? What if someone else applies for the same position and I wont get elected? What if I don't know enough about the field I wanted to work with? What if...?

They were all crushed one way or the other and I applied. So the first really big thing that hit me hard was that there were sooooo many questions in the application. And quite honestly - for most of the questions, I had no idea what the right answer should be. So it took a lot of time to find answers and write them down so that others would understand my points as well.

Writing the speech was another thing that hit me hard. It was in high school when I last had to write and give a speech like that. Somehow I did it, got through from the interview and was selected to the EB 2006/2007.

And what a wonderful year that was!

It's official - Kristina Toms is the next president in AIESEC Estonia

It's official - AIESEC in Estonia has only few moments ago elected new president for 2008/2009 and the lucky one is (drums, please...) KRISTINA TOMS!

Thank you ever so much Marko and Lauri - nothing's gonna change our love for both of you :)

We also received the results of the confidence votes for the vice president candidates and two of our own amazing members, both from my own team - Cristo & Marina have received confidence from all of the members. Now just some interviews and we'll know our future leaders.

Aigerim (from AIESEC Almaty), Maarja and Marian also received confidence, so whether they will be in the new National team will also be sure soon :)

Thank you all for your contribution during the whole process. We really couldn't have done it without the great suppport from all of you ;)

The very first LCM this year

We had LC meeting last Wednesday. It was the very first one of this year and we had some interesting conversations there.

Firstly we discussed shortly about LC meetings in general - why are they important? Why is it that usually there aren't so many people attending? How come there were hardly any people from Exchange side? What made those 4 team leaders come to the meeting out of 11 team leaders that we actually have? Some interesting thoughts came up and now the hard work starts to make conclusions from them and really make the meetings more interesting and worth the time.

We also received some information about Annual Conference - what's the status with the organizing? What kind of difficulties have come up and how are they dealing with them? How many people have already registered and so on. A lot of information there as well. Liise also shared with us what is happening from the agenda side.

Just before our guests arrived, there was briefly information about applying to AIESEC Tallinn EB as well. The elections will happen a bit earlier this year - March 7-8 and this year AIESEC Tallinn is organizing the event. We will keep you updated on that topic as some preparations have to be made still.

Last but not least - we had some alumni there telling us their stories: Siim Juks and Jaan Aps. They shared with us funny stories from their time in AIESEC, where and what are they doing now and how being in AIESEC has helped them to get there. As we didn't have much time to chat, they said they'll answer all our questions at Annual Conference - so be there ;)

All in all, I felt quite happy to see all of you who came - I hope you got something out of it and you also had a chance to share your ideas what we could do better for next LC meetings.

The Unknown

It is absolutely good to be back in business, the feeling is awesome :) I have managed to relax a bit, be with my family and friends, thought about my next steps and so on. I have to admit, my year so far has been quite bumpy, but also refreshing. I have had time to realize that making plans is necessary at times, but absolutely pointless at other times. You know what they say "life is what happens while we're making plans" ;)

Anyhow, plans are still important. For example I cannot imagine making new year resolutions without a bit of planning. It's one thing to write down what I want from the coming year, a whole lot of other deal is to really make it happen. To see the dreams come true. No, I won't write down my own dreams here, sorry to disappoint you :) I'm only here to provoke your thoughts ;)

I remember the time lets say about 5 years ago - it was quite the same, quiet new year's eve with family, missing the loved ones, etc. Then I decided for the coming year - that's the one where I renew my relations with my good friends. Guess what?! Didn't quite happen, cause I just thought that thinking about it is enough. It wasn't. It never is! It's the action plan that will make it happen! That year I lost quite a bit. Some friends, lost touch with family, just minded my own business instead of focusing on what is important.

Then another picture - Christmas 2005, at Kivi talu (you know the place where the traditional AIESEC Tallinn Christmas party takes place), I hardly knew anyone, but I had a blast. The evening was wonderful, I felt almost like home :) I guess I knew it already there and then that I have given my finger to AIESEC, it's now up to AIESEC to take the full hand :) And it did! Step-by-step it got me into everything more and more.

January 2007, exactly one year ago - whew, I had to start thinking what's next! It was a tough call, I was sure that I won't apply for president, then I was sure that I was absolutely the only candidate and I must do it, then I started to feel that it's actually something that would really suit to be the next step in my own growth. Today I feel that I'm the luckiest person to be in this position and it took me about 9 months to realize that. The good thing is that for the first time I feel that my family has started to appreciate it. They are finally beginning to understand what it means to me, what it means for the organization, heck, what it means for them ;) To have your family support you in what you are doing - I really wish all of you to experience that - the feeling is awesome :)

What is the meaning of all this?! Well, we all give the meaning to our words and our actions ourselves. And most of the time it's just a matter of time when we are able to put it to reasonable words when we explain it to others. Once I'm able to talk in my parents' language and explain what is it exactly that I'm doing here, I'm on top of it, because then I can be sure that I really know what I'm doing and it's not something totally random.

So feel free to explore your options, think things through, act on your emotions if needed and find the best (or the next best thing if that's going to get you the best thing) available action that really helps you get to the point where you can say - it's great to be back in business, my friends and family support me on my way and the feeling, the feeling is totally awesome!

This is the first time away from home and the first time for me to spend it in warm weather. I have to admit, it has been quite different and strange. Christmas decorations, sunshine and brightness just somehow don’t match with Christmas. Nevertheless it feels fantastic. I love going outside and not having to spend 10 minutes to get dressed. I’m happy because I can finally enjoy summer after 1,5 years:)

It’s hard to describe the whole journey, it’s hard to find the right words...It’s been a year of success and failures, a year of progress and unfortunately also disappointments in myself. It’s been a year of travelling and exploring, growth and reflection, a year of answers but also a year of more questions about my life and where I am heading...

I actually have become more Nigerian every day. For example, I felt cold one morning (although it was probably around 25 degrees)… I also really like to go around here on my own as much as I can and try to speak yoruba as much as possible (although my vocabulary is still very limited). And my skin is not that white anymore – at least when I look into the mirror, but when I compare it with others skin in pictures then it still seams too white, but I’m working on improvements!

On the first days I was really feeling some overheating moments, but now it’s already quite ok, as long as I have my sun-glasses with me. But it’s still funny that instead of heaters there are big air-conditioners in houses. And one thing that I never thought about is that what’s the sense of bringing some Estonian chocolate with me when during unpacking my things I discover that they are all melted… Hmm, well yes, at least the taste is the same…

It’s amazing how balconies are built. The ground is with a small angle so the water you poor on the ground for cleaning all eventually runs out from a small hardly noticeable pipe. Very high tech. I suspect cleaning ladies were the ones who told construction men to do it that way.

I am not living under a palm tree in case you wonder. We found a really nice flat in a nice area with reasonable price. But of course you can’t have everything, otherwise you start getting suspicious. So I am proud to announce that we don’t have hot water. It wasn’t part of my New Years Resolution to have a refreshing cold shower every morning but I guess I need to include that to the list now.

The official dinner was a success, wanna know why?

Food was great - after whole week of eating Lithuanian traditional food, we got something really different
People danced AIESEC dances wearing suits and nice dresses - how odd is that?!
Really good cake!
People were given time to talk with each other instead of having an evening full of speeches and performances
The main sponsor was really youthful and his speech was something totally different from what I expected
There was no "This is table nr 1..." and it's the first event when I've seen that happen :D
Amazing people, lots of cool conversations, some good-bye's...

I really liked that evening, it took everything together so nicely :)

Practical Leadership - after EuroCo

I was thinking about the title of this post for bit longer than I usually do. One of the reasons being that I wanted to write about two things that seemed at one point totally different deserving different posts. No, it will be under one topic and that's it :)

Coming back from EuroCo

Imagine - it's 5 in the afternoon and the conference ends, people are leaving home (airports, bus/train stations, etc) and 2 Estonian girls know that they have at least 5 more hours to "kill" before they can start heading home. So, we made it to Vilnius, found a place to hang out, enjoyed good food and some tea. Everything is still quite fine. Then comes the decision to rest in the car while we wait for the others and almost the same time comes information that 2 Latvian girls are now ready to join us. Okey, so we meet them, they want to go to this party, I want to sleep in the car, so be it. (Just for your information, McDonalds parking lot near train station is not the quietest place to be at trying to sleep).

If you managed to think along, you'd know that there is one girl trying desperately to get some sleep, 3 girls at a party and 1 girl still not with us and the time just goes by. It's past midnight when we first hear from her, so we managed to get nearer to the place she's at. And that's when it really strikes me - all of us waiting in the car, we are absolutely widening our limits, our minds. There is high tension, because all of us are tired and can't wait to leave this city, but still - no one says a word.

Many times when we come across these situations, we find it hard to keep our mouth shut or just avoid certain topics in order to keep the thin line of balance. That to me is leadership in practise - always recognizing the situations around us and acting accordingly. Realising that we are not leaders only when we are with our own team but also in our everyday life.

The role of the leader should never be put 'on hold' - it should reflect to ourselves and to others in all of our actions!

Dear LC Tallinn!!!
Lately I know many of us have been involved in recruitment a lot. Many of us might be tired of it. I personally feel silly because the first thought I have when I get home tired as hell is that I should wash the orange recruitment shirt now instead of resting, because otherwise it won't be dry tomorrow so I won't be able to wear it:) We are all making long days and spending lot's of time in coridors of different Uni's doing recruitment. Sometimes it might seem a monotone work.

I'm writing here now in order to remind you and also myself that it is by far not just a monotone work.

Each day we're giving out flyers in the coridors there might be someone whose life we're going to change!Recruitment is one of THE processes about changing lifes, being agents of positive change:)

It's silly to think of this as a mission, but all in all, using my own example, I think that the person who completely accidentally lead me to AIESEC changed my life sooooo much. Let's change lifes people!WE CAN!!Let's just DO IT:)

I have felt soooo much team spirit in our latest recruitment activities..thank you guys for this..but there is sooooooo much more we can do!!!!

In order to achieve this, let's cheer up eachother when we're tired, let support eachother, let's not let us forget our message - creating a special story, and let's not forget that what we're offering is one of the best experiences!!There is one more week we really need to shine..so let's wear the orange shirts, let's ask people to join our infominutes, let's inspire ourselves and our potential new members and let's rock!! Huuh, it's been almost-almost one week that I've been officially la presidenta and it feel quite good already :) Although most of my energy still has gone to my studies because of the exam session, I've had few things on my mind and todo list.

It's always so hard to know exactly what the president is doing because a lot of P's work doesn't really stand out or show out. So I just wanted to share what I did during my first week ;)

Last Friday, my very first official day, I got a message from one of our members that she got a message that her membership in our database has expired. So the very first thing I got to do, was to update all members in our database. Some of them needed to expire, some of them will be around in AIESEC for at least another year, right :D
Also on Friday we had our AIESEC Tallinn picnic which was organised by our cute&cool PD&HR Liise and Siret. They had done really good job ;) Anyways, my task there was to first give a short speech and later fill some different tasks with my EB team. We succeeded quite well, I think :)

Then almost endless e-mails with the new P-Club regarding different issues in AIESEC in Estonia. We're going to have our Team Days during coming weekend and of course many things needed to be cleared out for that as well.
Of course the data in the AIESEC.net Tallinn community needed to be changed as well. We have our EB picture up and also our contact information. First things first right ;)
No way I can do without e-mailing someone - so I've sent many e-mails to my EB as well regarding different topics (recruitment, transition updates, planning, conference opportunities, etc), now all I have to do is wait for the replies :D
There was also a deep discussion with Marjam, our lovely AIESEC Estonia president, about different important topics such as where AIESEC is heading to, how to change our mindsets, who are we really and how to become the most powerful youth organization in Estonia.
I guess pretty much last, but not least - it was brought to my attention that a lot of people in AIESEC.net Tallinn community had not been approved for their membership status. So, I did that as well, pretty much making a lot of people happy and getting even more e-mails than ever before :)

So, that wraps up my week quite nicely, I'm sure :) There are loads more to come once my exams are over and I don't have to worry about them anymore. Of course there's more transition meetings coming as well (one of them already tomorrow afternoon), but I'm exited and really looking forward to them ;)

And just one more remark before I close this post - watch out, AIESEC Estonia! Tallinn is going to rock your socks off! :D

But I want to get the comb when I have potential that my hair will grow again - I am trying to loose my first set of hair in AIESEC :).

Cleaning the office

Last Saturday I joined Siki´s cleaning team to get rid of trash in AIESEC TTY office. At first I was hesitating a bit, because of the recent AC experience, where there tended to be A Lot of cleaning, but in the end I didn’t regret my decision at all and had an opportunity to spend some good time with friends and be useful. Luckily the office is quite small, so there couldn’t be much trash, at least I thought so… but there ended to be a quite large amount of trash outside of the office. Mainly we found many old papers, flipps, posters etc. especially behind one cupboard J Seemed to be a nice place where to hide not useful things. Anyway, now it’s empty again.

It reminded me one incident of my childhood. I wanted some cornflakes, but accidentally I put keefir instead of milk in the bowl. I couldn’t eat that, because it was disgusting. So I decided to get rid of it and not to tell mom about that. And guess what seemed the best place at the moment? Kitchen cupboad of course. So I poured all the cornflakes with keefir behind the kitchen cupboard hoping it will disappear eventually. Well, obviously it didn’t, and honestly I don’t remember what happened next. Probably mom found it and cleaned it up. So much from hiding things behind the cupboard :)

I want to thank our small office cleaning team for the nice Saturday evening: Siki, Gertel and Marina and hope the EB feels gooood in their nice clean office.

Winds of change

It's not that long since the New Year's Eve when everyone makes promises for the coming year. Almost two weeks of this year, fabulous 2007 has gone by and what has happened since? It is clearly the time when people look to the coming year and decide what they want to get out of it. From my point of view, I guess it's even more important to do this in the first days of the year, rather than spending last days of the previous year for it.

So have I started to look into the future and I have started to believe what all the astrologists have been saying in different forecasts for this year - year 2007 will be a lot better than the last one, it will bring great success for those who know what they want and know where they want to go. So it's time to set our compasses ready, for that will be one of the things that lead to fulfill all the expectations we have.

However, in the sense of AIESEC, some setbacks that are common to happen in January, have already started. I think that for a People Development responsible, the hardest times are firstly in the fall, sometime in October when you find out about first people who at first thought AIESEC would be cool, but then decide to focus on something else. The second time will come around in January, where people look back to their schoolyear, what they have done in AIESEC so far and decide that it really isn't for them. I do believe that the time is not over yet, it has only begun.

The last period will be the end of May, when the term ends and you're no longer sure what's going to happen with all these people under the new EB. Will they stay, will they go? Will they find new challenges in AIESEC or do they want to achieve so much more in their personal lives? These are tough times for any person in leadership position in AIESEC, but most of all, for the one who really cares for each and every one of the members and doesn't want to see them go at all. The best thing to remember at times like these, is to make sure that I know - it's nothing personal - it's not about what I haven't been doing, not caring enough - it's about people developing so fast these days that they grow out of their own ideas so quickly.

Well, I'm sad to see any of you go, but if you really have to - it was really great to get to know you and I wish you all great success in the future and I do hope that you have found something great out of the times you got to spend with us ;)

I was looking for some photos to create an album which I can show my friends and family without the help of the computer and I noticed one thing - most of the pics are actually AIESEC pics. Looking through all these albums (not done by far yet, there're more albums to look through) came all those fun memories flushing back to me.

Looking back to my own year in the most of fun kind of way, with pics - that is something I recommend for each and every one of you. Pictures are the best reminders of good times (and bad as well, if you've had them). Pics also have the ability to bring out the best in the situations we've had. You might not want to remember that bad food from that conference, but you will most definately remember the great people and cool sessions and awesome parties, right :)

LTS - Local Training Seminar for newies 2006

LTS - my very first facilitating experience. It really showed me that the most important thing about making such a seminar happening are the people who you do it with. Feeling so sick just minutes before my performance and being able to pull it together within 5 minutes - that is something special and the biggest thanks are to Siim, our LCP, who was willing to make this thing for me, should I not have been able to. But seeing him gave me so much strength ;) Ahh, sweet memories.

Photoshoot in July 2006

This years recruitment started already in June. We had such fun time together with the recruitment teams from Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu, especially at our photoshoot where we made some pics for the recruitment materials. The team was awesome and the photoshoot even better :D Just some month before the photoshoot we had LC Tallinn picnic in the very same place, Kadrioru Park, and it was the very first time we had a chance to feel ourselves as a team with our EB. I still remember so vividly the yellow hair of Siki's on Siim's pic :D

Transition in May

It doesn't seem that long ago at all when we first started our transition for this term. The old EB trying to get all their knowledge delivered to us within 1,5 days. Seemed impossible at the time, but here we are now - half of the term is already over and soon we begin preparing everything for the new EB for the next term. Even now that two of the former EB members are in MC, I feel somehow close to them, connected in some level - knowing that I can always turn to them when I feel like it. I wish that the next term's EB would be as close to us as we are to the previous ones. It adds extra value to the term and the whole picture :)

Synergy 2006

And last, but not least greatest memory of the past year - this is where it all got started for me. I was so doubtful about going to Synergy. I felt that it wasn't for me, I don't want to go, it's something silly and so on. But then I somehow managed to get all my schoolthings done on time and I even managed to get there on time for the election of MC members. What a great feeling it was, I had butterflies in my stomach the whole conference :) It was awesome and the conference itself was the first event where I started to feel that I'm part of something big. Something out of reach. That something that's called AIESEC spirit. I remember the chats we had with EB, other members, exchanging cool ideas and thoughts. It was AWESOME!

So, all in all - I have had so many great moments throughout the past year that it's impossible to put it all in this one post and few pics. It's so much more than that! I wish you all so many nice memories and moments from AIESEC and also from life itself. Today is the best day to start living your life fullest and start collecting those AHHAA moments ;)

EB at AIESEC office after midnight

Hey :)

It's 2:00 am and probably you are thinking why Siki is logged in to LC Tallinn's blog, doesn't she have another life? Nooooo, it's a joy :P AIESEC is one big part of my life and I'm enjoying it!

I had forgotten the username and keyword while logging in, I tried and I tried, sent one sms to Riina (it's 2 o'clock!) and then I remembered it! After that I received sms from Riina with the data :D (EB is connected even at night)

But why am I talking that to you? Am I weird? Of course I am, but I just arrived home.. We had EB chill night at AIESEC office in TUT :) We drank some wine that Siim had brought from Macedonia and talked and talked and talked.. Talked about our future plans, about school, about AIESEC.. and laughed a lot. Meanwhile visited a shop in TUT's dorm, bought some snack and went back to the office.

It was so great feeling to talk with my EB members. While we are so different persons, we have something similar as well, AIESEC connects :)

We prepared our performance for tomorrow's Christmas party and we are waiting to see our beloved members :)

After 1:00am Siim and Riina sent me to home. We walked through the avenue of Sõpruse and visited one park called Männi, where children are playing. Unfortunately at this time we were the only "children" in this park. We had fun :)

One thing is to work in one team or to be a team leader, other thing is to be in EB, where your team is small but still the synergy is so powerful. I just arrived home and I got really motivated from that night. Every minute that I spend with my EB gives me the great amount of energy and I feel how great is AIESEC =)

It's good to be it's good to be in EB, hell yeah !

Last LC meeting in 2006

Yesterday, we had our last meeting in this year for the whole local. It's funny, just today when I was in the office talking to one of our members, Tarvi, we thought that half of the year has gone past so quickly. Soon it's the election time of new MC after that some months and it's time to apply for the EB of LC Tallinn and our term will be over. That is a bit sad, but I'm sure interesting times are ahead of us all.

Anyways, I didn't really want to talk about that, moreover, I'd like to reflect a bit on yesterday's meeting :) So we started off pretty smooth, all of the most important people in our LC had a chance to say what they have been up to and what's the status of their projects and all. It was really great to hear that people have been busy and what's even better, one of our project manager's is going to a company meeting tomorrow and one of our cool new members is going with him to get the experience.

Then later on we had a really cool session about AIESEC values by Vika - do you know what they are? If not, do you know where to find them? If not, do you know to whom to turn with this kind of questions? :) Well, I hope you already know at least the question to the last question :D We also went over some really basic things, just to refresh our memory about them. And that got me really thinking about my job experience in the summer where supposedly, we were to have refresher trainings each month - and trust me, the systems and processes there were lot easier than in AIESEC. So here's a thought for next years to come.

Another thing that really made me wonder was that most of the time, people were softly chatting on the background while we spoke. But once I started to talk about the thing I had prepared earlier for the meeting... well, the audience went really quiet and for a second there, I thought I'd scared them with something. But that's the thing, I have prepared something and I so much want to attach to it that I forget to do it interactivly, so it would be interesting and to get people speaking up and asking questions. Hmm, some things to think over for the next times, I believe :)

So all in all, the meeting was such a success in my point of view and Siki's session added such value to it. For a moment there, even I managed to imagine what I've done so far and see a glimpse of myself in few months from now. I really liked how many people were present and the atmosphere was just awesome. As I said to one of my dear friends just moments ago - my relationship with AIESEC is pretty great and what motivates me the most are people, the social atmosphere. Knowing that we can have loads of fun even in the LC meeting and we don't have to have a drinking party for that - this is really priceless and something to take with me to the year 2007.

See you all in our Christmas party - let's make it yet another unforgivable event ;)

Hello,

Two weeks ago I got a phonecall from MC. Siim Säinas was inviting me to go to the birthday party of The Federation of Estonian Student Unions (FESU). It took place at House of Mustpeade.

Together we were representing AIESEC.

Before going to that birthday party we met at Viru center and tried to think what to buy for a birthday present. It was really really hard (I remembered the day when our Student Union of TUT had a birthday and Siim Saarlo was trying to find something for the present, huh, quite hard). Finally we decided to give to the FESU 5 free tickets to our Annual Conference's open day event. We bought one cool decorated mug from Tiimari :D and in it we put those tickets.

In front of the door we tried to think what symbol does this present have. Siim Säinas thought that this mug is for the milk and milk is symbolizing richness :D Haha!

When we went in front of the stage Säinas was pretty cool and talked better than in front of the door :D

During that night we drank a wine, had a talk with different people, had fun

Even Ursula was performing during that night :D

Some days ago my friend sent me an e-mail and told that I am famous (Üliõpilasleht - in one newspaper there is one photo of me with other cool people, photo from that party

To sum this text up. While being a member of EB you get many different invitations as Riina mentioned in her posting. Before that FESU party, I was representing AIESEC with our LCP at Student Union of TUT's birthday party

One month ago I was representing AIESEC in one commission as well where we chose the year's best ones in TUT (e.g. the best organization, best lecturer etc).

It's good to be it's good to be in EB.

Our girl applying for MC Finland

This morning I heard some really great news and that really got me thinking about how small Estonia really is. One of AIESEC Estonia members has applied for MC (Members Committee) Director position in Finland. Even though Helena is actually from AIESEC Pärnu, it doesn't really matter to us - just like it was when Mairi got to AIESEC International. When in a small country like Estonia and one of our AIESEC members applies for a great position outside, it's a success for all local committees in Estonia, aside from Pärnu, also in Tartu and Tallinn.

So, Helena, I wish you in the name of all our LC Tallinn members, best of luck and hopefully you will get the desired position :)

Sometimes you've gotta shine like a star

Absolutely, sometimes you just have to shine! Like we did in this Christmas ball organised by Student Union of TUT. It was a nice event, not so well thought-through, but we enjoyed it while being there. Didn't get to dance though.

I just wanted to say that it's really nice to be in a student organisation like AIESEC is, because you get to be in so many places, you get invitation all the time. All you have to do is to show up and shine :) I really encourage you all to take some opportunities that suit you - find the things that make you shine like a shooting star and enjoy every single second of it ;) It'll be worth it, I can bet on that!
